SIFF closing gala film

Our third film was Bottle Shock (6:30 pm, Cinerama), the SIFF closing gala film. It’s about an international wine tasting between US and French wineries in 1976, and about one of the US vineyards and its people. It will no doubt draw comparison with Sideways; it shares the wine theme, and is very good, but otherwise isn’t very similar. I enjoyed it a lot.

Before Bottle Shock, SIFF officials gave some speeches, and then invited the film-makers on stage. Among them were director and co-writer Randall Miller, his wife and co-writer Jody Savin, and stars Bill Pullman and Freddy Rodriguez. They were delightful, and interacted nicely with the crowd. They came out afterwards for a Q-and-A, which was very nice. Several signed my SIFF book. I took lots of pictures, but I haven’t checked whether they’re good yet.

Bill Pullman – who attended a screening of his new project – "Your Name Here" – escaped my radar, initially. But when I scouted the landscape for news tidbits, I spied the casual handsome actor posing with fans for photos and streaming videos.

Coming this fall…or sooner

Today at the Clay, preceding When Did You Last See Your Father, one of the trailers that ran was for Bottle Shock. I wish I could’ve taken a picture. The narrator guy said "coming this fall." Woohoo.

Then, the trailer ran again, at the Embarcadero, before War, Inc. Same trailer, but this time, it was tagged with the text "uncorking in theaters this August." Maybe if I catch the trailer again, the release date will be bumped up a another month?

Saturday’s closing night film selection is Bottle Shock, based on the true story of how the Napa Valley wine industry made a name for themselves: by beating out the French in a blinded Chardonnay tasting.

CineVegas hosts world premieres this weekend

Bill Pullman and Ivana Milicevic star in "Your Name Here." The movie’s world premiere is scheduled for tonight.

There’s something magical about a movie’s world premiere.

…"It’s kind of like a pregnancy test — is it pink or is it blue?" says actor Bill Pullman, whose "Your Name Here" is one of three world premieres scheduled tonight at the Palms. "I can’t wait to see it with an audience.

…"As soon as I read it, I was in love with it," Pullman confesses in a telephone interview from his Southern California home. "I couldn’t help myself."

And even though plenty of people told him not to make "Your Name Here," Pullman says he couldn’t resist another trip down the rabbit-hole of "kaleidoscoping reality stories," a genre he’s been drawn to since 1990’s "Brain Dead," a psychological thriller scripted by "Twilight Zone" veteran Charles Beaumont. "It’s followed me — I’m going to have my own mini-oevre," he jokes.

"The beautiful thing about festivals is they have to carve out their own niche," comments actor Bill Pullman, whose "Your Name Here" premieres at CineVegas Friday. "CineVegas is capable of screening movies that are adventurous — a lot of (festivals) aren’t."
