HORNELL, N.Y. (18 NEWS) – Following battles with invading aliens, a massive crocodile, and a friendly ghost, Bill Pullman was back in his hometown of Hornell — showcasing his newest story, “The Ballad of Lefty Brown.”
Many people filled the YMCA in Hornell to see Pullman, but it wasn’t just for a movie premier. It was also to help a cause.
“It’s a town that has a lot of heart, it’s gone through a lot of up’s and downs,” Pullman said. “It’s got it’s own grace and dignities and connections to values that I’ve carried with me.”
He was back home, Friday Night, for the premiere of his newest movie, “The Ballad of Lefty Brown,” a movie about a cowboy who is killed and Pullman’s character tries to find the killer.
The premiere was also to honor former mayor, Shawn Hogan, and raise money for a scholarship with his name.
“When there’s a civic leader that people have honored and respected for their consistent values, how hard he’s worked to keep industry and jobs in Hornell,” Pullman said, “we ought to mark it with something so that’s why (I said) let’s have a premiere.”
Among all his movies and Hollywood stardom, Bill Pullman always finds the time to come back to Hornell. More so on a night like this for a drive, for a scholarship.
The scholarship will go to a student who demonstrates civic mindedness and community service.
“He wanted to do something special, he wanted to honor my service, but he also wanted to do something for the community,” Shawn Hogan, the former mayor, said. “He says, ‘let me put my arm around this a little bit and I’ll call you back.'”
Hogan said that around Thanksgiving, Pullman called him “and says ‘I’d like to do a scholarship fund at the Y’. He’s been more than generous to the community over the years.”
All the money raised was from ticket sales, auctions and a donation from Pullman himself.
“I’ve lived around a lot of places and I just love this,” Pullman said. “The hills, the valleys and the people that are living here.”
Hogan said his favorite Bill Pullman movie is “The Serpent and the Rainbow.”

HORNELL — Hollywood comes home to Hornell on Friday, when a movie premier rolls out the red carpet for a good cause.
The Maple City’s most heralded son, actor Bill Pullman, will unveil his latest project “The Ballad of Lefty Brown” in his hometown to benefit the Hornell YMCA’s scholarship fund and to honor the service of long-time mayor Shawn Hogan.
Pullman independently approached the YMCA with the idea to establish a fund in Hogan’s name just before the holidays.
“This is a sustainable source for the Y to support our charitable work, especially around bringing kids scholarships for membership, program participation and child care,” said Rob Gilchrist, YMCA executive director.
Though Pullman had been a long-time supporter of the YMCA, Gilchrist was still stunned by the overwhelming gesture.
Pullman also made an independent donation to get the scholarship program going in Hogan’s name to honor his 32 years as mayor.
The scholarship program has already done tremendous good in the past, according to organizers. In the last year, more than 500 families were given access to reduced or free programming through the YMCA.
“Every family that wants to be a part of the Y, regardless of what they make, we’re going to work with them to make sure they can be here,” Gilchrist said.
For three weeks, YMCA staff have coordinated the evening of events with partners at the Spotlight Theater and The Main Place.
The evening of entertainment will begin at the YMCA at 5:30 p.m., with an hour long meet and greet event featuring Pullman and Hogan. Those who attend can have their photo taken with Pullman. The meet and greet will also feature snacks and drinks provided by The Brute, as well as a silent auction that will also benefit the scholarship fund.
The movie premier will begin at 7 p.m. at Spotlight Theater, and a reception will follow at The Main Place, where a more extensive food offering will be made available.
A cowboy thriller that pits Pullman in the role of “Lefty Brown,” a lawman trying to avenge the killing of his partner and avoid the rap being pinned on him, the movie promises to be action packed.
A total of 300 tickets were made available to the public at a cost of $50 each. As of Wednesday afternoon, only 67 remained.
Tickets are expected to sell out. Those interested are encouraged to inquire with the YMCA as soon as possible.
