Two-time Oscar winner Sally Field and fellow American actor Bill Pullman take to the stage in a major revival of All My Sons this week at the Old Vic.

Now the first pictures of the cast of Arthur Miller’s play have been released.

The pair star alongside Colin Morgan and Jenna Coleman in the story about a businessman responsible for the deaths of 21 pilots after his firm sold faulty parts to the airforce. Set in 1947, Pullman and Field play husband and wife Joe and Kate Keller, whose eldest son died at war, while Morgan plays their surviving son Chris. With the return of a figure from the past, long-buried truths threaten to rupture their already fragile lives.

The cast is completed by Theo Boyce, Bessie Carter, Gunnar Cauthery, Oliver Johnstone, Kayla Meikle, Ruth Redman, Sule Rimi and Russell Wilcox.

Jeremy Herrin directs the drama, with design by Max Jones, lighting by Richard Howell and sound by Carolyn Downing.

All My Sons runs at the Old Vic from April 24-June 8

PAL HANSEN FOR SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE
The Sunday Times,

My first encounter with Bill Pullman was at the Cannes film festival in 2008, when I was sure he was hung-over. He was friendly, professional, but his eyes looked like extras from the Red Wedding.

Bill Pullman Reveals His Methods Behind Complex ‘The Sinner’ Character

“It became a very personal discussion about my own past,” the actor tells The Hollywood Reporter of how he crafted his character’s journey on the USA drama.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter In Studio, Bill Pullman opened up on his role in the series The Sinner, as well as his overall journey as an actor which has now spanned over 30 years.

After studying theater in New York state and subsequently teaching at Montana State University, Pullman got his first big break in the film industry at the age of 33 in the Bette Midler-Danny DeVito comedy Ruthless People. “I guess that would count as a late bloomer,” Pullman said with a smile.

The actor has performed in his fair share of genres, including family films (Casper), romantic comedies (While You Were Sleeping) and summer blockbusters (Independence Day). In addition to the many likable characters Pullman has played over the years, he made a point to note that he has also played “a lot of different, objectionable characters.” He continued, “I’ve always really liked noir movies. I find that there’s a level of humor in them sometimes and finding those kinds of scripts were really intriguing to me.”

In the first season of The Sinner, which was just announced for a third season, Pullman’s Detective Ambrose investigates a murder that takes place at a public beach by an unassuming woman played by Jessica Biel. While unraveling the real story, Ambrose also fights his own personal demons.

“When we started the first season [showrunner Derek Simonds] was eager to have me in the writer’s room,” Pullman said. “I think because the character of the detective was not that well charted in the German novel — he wasn’t as fleshed out as what Derek wanted to do — so I could talk to the writers about a lot of things. It became a very personal discussion about my own past; what could be tracking similarly and what it is to have certain kinds of trauma early on in life that maybe forms behavior that can be manifested later. So I used a lot of my own life.”

Pullman continued: “I ended up describing a lot of my upbringing. I think life is always an unpeeling of the onion about who you are and to get a better grip on your identity, and I had a bit of unpacking to do and talked a lot about it in the writers’ room.”

As the viewership numbers came in during the first season, it became clear to the network that a second season would make sense. With the story arc from the source material being completely wrapped up in the first season, the show creators looked to Detective Ambrose as the most logical throughline for the next season.

“[Derek Simonds] said, ‘I wonder if you’re okay with this as a premise for the second season because we’re going to take Ambrose into the belly of the beast. We’re going to bring him back to where he had his early upbringing and is the last place he wants to go back to,’” Pullman said. “I’ve never done a repeating series before, so I had never gone through this. It takes a certain amount of trust to know that the character isn’t going to be suddenly distorted in some way to fit some writer’s conceit of where the character goes.”

Pullman will reprise his role as Detective Harry Ambrose in the third season of The Sinner. He is currently the host of the four-part docuseries Epic Yellowstone, which is now airing on Smithsonian Channel.

Matt Bomer Joins Bill Pullman in ‘The Sinner’ Season 3

The Sinner has officially been picked up for a third season, with Matt Bomer set to join the show starring opposite series lead Bill Pullman.

The third season follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Pullman) as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York. Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career.

Bomer will play Jamie, an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of an accident. The role marks a homecoming for Bomer, who received one of the breakout roles of his career when he starred in the USA series White Collar for six seasons beginning in 2009. He has gone on to star in shows like American Horror Story, The Last Tycoon, and Doom Patrol, the last of which currently airs on DC Universe. Bomer has also appeared in films like the Magic Mike franchise, The Nice Guys, and Papi Chulo. He is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.

Derek Simonds will return for Season 3 as executive producer and showrunner. Jessica Biel–who starred in Season 1–and Michelle Purple serve as executive producers through their company, Iron Ocean. Charlie Gogolak and Willie Reale also executive produce, with Adam Bernstein set to direct the first two episodes and executive produce. Universal Content Productions produces.

The renewal was essentially a no-brainer for the cable network. The first season was the number one new cable series of 2017 and scored an Emmy nomination for Biel and two Golden Globe nominations. The second season starring Pullman and Carrie Coon also scored well in the ratings and holds a 97% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In recent months, USA has also ordered the dramas: Treadstone, set in the Jason Bourne universe; Dare Me, based on the novel by Meagan Abbot; Brave New World, based on the book by Aldous Huxley; and the anthology  Briarpatch starring Rosario Dawson. USA also recently ordered a ninth and final season of Suits–though the spinoff Pearson debuts in the summer–and has Mr. Robot returning for a fourth and final season later this year.

Bill Pullman among those honoring Humanities Awards winners – KTVH.com

HELENA – Actor and Montana rancher Bill Pullman was among those honoring Montanans with the Governor’s Humanities Awards Thursday.

In a ceremony at the state capitol building, five people received the award for their contributions to the state’s art, literature and cultural heritage.

This year’s winners included Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs, Ellen Crain, Tami Haaland, Elizabeth McNamer, and Thomas McGuane.

McGuane, an author, told MTN the humanities help people understand each other better and more completely.

“They’re not designed to solve problems or make life convenient, but they lead to a kind of spiritual fulfillment that I think we’re struggling for right now,” said McGuane.

Ambrose Tubbs is a historian who’s written popular books on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Crain is the director of the Butte-Silver Bow Archives. Haaland is a leader in poetry education, and McNamer is a religious studies professor at Rocky Mountain College.

At a banquet Thursday night, Pullman was the keynote speaker. Longtime Montana broadcaster William Marcus was also there to emcee the event.

Pullman told MTN his heart remains in Montana, where he was a professional actor before LA or New York.

He came to Montana decades ago to work with Shakespeare in the Parks.

“There’s people that have dedicated their lives to the higher pursuits, and it’s great that Montana has a great crop of them,” said Pullman.

“There’s a particular sense of humility, and a certain kind of sense of wanting to engage with what change is going on here, and seeing ourselves as a certain kind of culture on this part of the Rocky Mountains.”

Pullman said he is excited to see a new generation invested in the humanities. He is currently working on a series with a young group of filmmakers in Bozeman.
